Port Hedland

Port Hedland was gazetted as the new harbour town site for the bustling beef and pearling industries in 1896. This area dates back over 20,000 years with a rich and varied history, it means different things to different people. In the 1960s a Government ‘embargo’ was lifted and the iron ore industry commenced, a new vision was born. Laws were formed to encourage private industry to build infrastructure and towns in exchange for royalties and tax rebates.

It worked! Port Hedland’s population grew from 300 to 15,000 people and 5,600 homes through the 1970′s. Young people settled and exciting towns were built in our Northern outback, creating our future. All Australian’s experienced great economic benefits. Today this area is responsible for 20 billion dollars of export wealth to our nation and we are growing to become a city.
